空軍機械師可以理來解為自製造、安裝、修理飛行器（飛機、航天器等）的專業技術人員。
首先介紹一下機械含義。機械是指一切具有確定的運動系統的機器和機構的總稱。
機械能幫人們降低工作難度或省力的工具裝置，像筷子、掃帚以及鑷子一類的物品都可以被稱為機械，他們是簡單機械。而復雜機械就是由兩種或兩種以上的簡單機械構成。通常把這些比較復雜的機械叫做機器。從結構和運動的觀點來看，機構和機器並無區別，泛稱為機械。
機械，源自於希臘語之Mechine及拉丁文Machina， 原指「巧妙的設計」，作為一般性的機械概念，可以追溯到古羅馬時期，主要是為了區別與手工工具。現代中文之「機械」一詞為機構為英語之（Mechanism）和機器（Machine）的總稱。機械的特徵有：機械是一種人為的實物構件的組合。機械各部分之間具有確定的相對運動。故機器能轉換機械能或完成有用的機械功，是現代機械原理中的最基本的概念。
明白了什麼是機械，再說機械師。機械師可以理解為通過了中國機械工程學會開展的機械工程師資格認證通過統一資格考試、業績考核和同行評議相結合的方式對專業技術人員進行評價的專業技術人員。
